I have several ideas. The main thing is to target one group at a time. If
everyone pours their energies into this, we can make short work of the
netkops and other self-appointed dominant members and bring the newsgroup to
it's knees. A strategy must be drawn up, different people can be appointed
to do different things. Then we can move on to another group, making
occasional posts to the previous group to keep them in check :-)
First we must decide whether to make the troll invasion obvious, or be
subtle about it. When this is decided, we can use a combination of the
following techniques (I await other ideas!):
Classic hit 'n run crossposting. This is my speciality. I could write for
ages on this, but I'll sum it up by saying that the main purpose of this is
to generate a large thread and in-fighting between group members, or start a
fight with the members of another newsgroup.
Infiltration. If the invasion is to be subtle, a few trolls must start
posting to the group as serious contributers a week or so beforehand. Once
the main invasion starts, these people will help along the invasion,
gradually showing their true colours when it's too late ;-)
Off topic posts that aren't offensive. They can be about innocent things
like politics or the weather, or plain weird posts that grab the readers
attention. The idea is to get the group completely off topic, thus
irritating the FAQ thumpers.
Thread hijacking. You've all seen this, a pertinent question is soon
forgotten as the regulars answer a totally irrelevant post made by someone
else in the thread.
Offensive posts. The only criteria is that they are offensive but not
harrassing, thus provoking the cry of 'I don't find this offensive, but
there might be children reading...' etc.
Flaming and insulting regulars. This could be used if other tactics fail, or
when the invasion is almost complete and a few people need to be
demoralised.
Re-writing the FAQ. This is a great one! The FAQ is re-written, or if
there's no FAQ to start with, one is made up. This FAQ must be posted at
least twice a week, maybe three times. A great example of this in in
soc.support.fat-acceptance, which has been almost trolled to death. The FAQ
has been re-written very subtly, so that if you were a new member to the
group, it looks very genuine. It even warns new readers of the 'regular
trolls', naming the most vocal regulars!
That's all I can think of right now, if anyone has anything to add then do
so. I like the 'John' idea a lot, this could be used as an initial attack.
